Finding healthier ways to cope

After attending counselling at The Marie Trust for just over a year, alongside taking part in classes, Anne reflected on the difference the support had made.

They explained that depression is still part of her life and that things continue to have ups and downs. However, she now feel better able to respond when things become difficult.

“Before, when things got bad, I just wanted to crawl away and hide or sleep a lot.”

Having regular classes gives her a reason to come in, connect with others and take a break from the things she is struggling with.

“The classes in here take you away from your own troubles.”

Through counselling, Anne has also developed healthier coping strategies. She now feels more able to recognise when something is becoming overwhelming, step away from situations that are upsetting her and manage her wellbeing more independently.

“I can say I’ve had enough and step away from things that are upsetting me. I can do that myself now, without having my sister step in when it gets too bad.”

Although the challenges have not disappeared, Anne feels she is now better equipped to manage difficult periods and seek support when she needs it.
