Leave a gift in your Will

A gift in your Will can help The Marie Trust continue supporting people affected by homelessness, poverty and trauma for years to come.

After looking after the people closest to you, even a small gift can help provide counselling, education, housing support and hope for people rebuilding their lives.

How to leave a gift

You can include The Marie Trust when writing a new Will or ask your solicitor about updating an existing one.

Please use our full details:

Suggested wording for your Will

You may wish to share the following wording with your solicitor:

“I give [the amount, percentage or share] of my estate to The Marie Trust, 29 Albion Street, Glasgow, G1 1LH, Scottish charity number SC040633, for its general charitable purposes, and I declare that the receipt of the Treasurer or another authorised officer shall be sufficient discharge to my executors"

This wording is provided as a general guide only. We recommend asking a solicitor to ensure your Will is legally valid and accurately reflects your wishes.

What types of gift can I leave?

A share of your estate

Also called a residuary gift, this is all or part of what remains after your debts, expenses and other gifts have been dealt with. Because it is a percentage rather than a fixed amount, it usually retains its relative value over time.

A fixed sum of mone

Also called a pecuniary gift, this is a specific amount of money. You may wish to ask your solicitor about linking the amount to inflation.

A specific item

This could bee property, shares, jewellery or another valuable possession. Please contact The Marie Trust before leaving a particular item so that we can confirm it can be accepted and used appropriately. These are the main gift types commonly explained by charities in Scotland.

FAQs

Do I need to make a new Will?

Not necessarily. A solicitor may be able to add a gift to an existing Will using a codicil. They can advise whether updating the full Will would be more appropriate.

Do I need to tell The Marie Trust?

No. Leaving a gift is a private decision. However, letting us know gives us the opportunity to thank you and discuss how you would like to stay connected with our work.

Can I choose how my gift is used?

You can express a preference, but gifts for general charitable purposes are usually most helpful because they allow The Marie Trust to respond to the greatest need at the time. Anyone considering restricting a gift to a particular service should contact the charity first.

Can I change my mind?

Yes. You can update your Will at any time by speaking to a solicitor.

Should I speak to a solicitor?

Yes. The Marie Trust cannot provide legal advice, and a solicitor can ensure that your wishes are properly recorded and legally valid.
