Success story
Mark's story
When Mark returned to The Marie Trust, he was recovering from a relapse and looking for something positive to give structure to his days.
He had previously attended art classes and remembered The Marie Trust as somewhere that had helped him before.
“I thought, right, The Marie Trust again. I’ll get back to them and see what they can offer me.”
Mark first became interested in art while in prison. He found that creative work helped occupy his mind, reduce thoughts about drugs and give him something meaningful to focus on.
After returning to the Education Service, Mark began attending art sessions again. His interest gradually developed into photography when he wanted to improve the photographs he was taking of his artwork.
“I started photography here. It came through the art, and then it just ran away with everything. I really enjoy it.”
“When I first came in, I had no self-belief. Coming here made me realise that I could do something.”
Photography also helped Mark manage his anxiety. Where he had previously avoided crowded places and struggled to leave the house, he began going out with his camera and actively looking for things to photograph.
The encouragement he received, along with positive responses to his work, helped rebuild his confidence. He has since sold one of his photographs and secured a place on an HND Photography course at college.
“When I first came in, I had no self-belief. Coming here made me realise that I could do something.”
Mark is also attending digital literacy sessions to improve his spelling and prepare for college assignments. He hopes eventually to work as a photographer or cinematographer.
“They’ve definitely built my confidence. I’ve got a reason to leave the house now, and it’s been a really good support network.”
Mark continues to use The Marie Trust as a place of support and connection. He also encourages people he knew while experiencing homelessness and addiction to consider taking part.
“You just plant a seed. Eventually, they might come (to The Marie Trust).”
