Citizen Literacy
Helping learners build literacy skills and confidence in a supported environment.
The Marie Trust places a strong emphasis on education as a route to rebuilding confidence, developing skills and creating new opportunities. Citizen Literacy has been working with The Marie Trust for a number of years and, with funding support from The Clothworkers’ Foundation, the new Digital Hub provides learners with access to digital devices and a customised version of the Citizen Literacy Web App, designed to support the development of reading, writing and digital skills.
The Citizen Literacy App
The Citizen Literacy App gives learners the opportunity to practise independently and at their own pace, extending learning beyond scheduled classes. It also enables tutors to offer more personalised support, helping learners build skills and confidence in a supportive environment where making mistakes is part of the learning process.
The Citizen Literacy App helps you learn the sounds of letters, practice speaking, writing and spelling words, completing sentences, understanding and learning the alphabet.

The Citizen Literacy App allows learners to work through exercise at their own pace and to repeat any exercise if they feel they need to refresh their learning or simply enjoyed the experience. All at their own pace without the pressure of assessment.

“If I had access to this when I was at school I would have learnt to read and write!”
For people who may have experienced significant barriers to conventional education, this combination of accessible technology and face-to-face support has proven particularly valuable. The partnership between Citizen Literacy and The Marie Trust demonstrates how digital learning can be used not simply to teach literacy, but to increase independence, confidence and participation in further learning.

“It’s great to see the progress of the student in real-time in the Tutor Hub and be able to provide immediate revision opportunities via the Hub and the Learner’s Web App.”
